Gardening Jobs for August


Well finally we've had some rain and the garden is now growing leaps and bounds!

Sow:

Radish, spinach, carrots, salad, rocket, beetroot, green manure.

Keep thinning seedlings as they grow to required spacing.

Take Cuttings of:

Rosemary

Pelagoniums

Fuschias

Harvest:

Autumn raspberries

Main potatoes

Runner and green beans

Lettuce

Radishes

Beetroot

Carrots

Chard

Courgettes - don't let them get too big.

Blackberries.

Secateurs jobs:

Cut back hardy geraniums and delphiniums.

Deadhead sweet peas, cosmos, roses, penstemons, lilies, dahlias.

Cut off bolted stems or dig out and replace.

Prune plum and cherry trees.

Pinch out cordon tomato side shoots and growing tips.

Prune privet and box...but please

check for birds nesting within first and delay

if so.

Prune summer flowering shrubs.

Trim lavender.

Summer prune wisteria by the end of the month.

Support:

Dahlias.

Tie in roses, clematis, honeysuckle, tomatoes.

Net brassicas.

Feed:

Tomatoes and sweet peas with a high potash feed.

Weed:

Keep hoeing them down why it's dry and they just shrivel up in the sunshine!

Lawns:

Raise the cutter setting and water in dry weather.

Water:

Especially camellias and rhododendrons so next years bud develop well.

Relax and start collecting seed for next year!
